"Is gang violence now on the rise"
An interesting article from Tuesday's Seattle Times that discusses the increase of violent crimes. The article mentions 3 specific incidents, including former YMCA particpant Allen Joplin. He was shot to death earlier this year.
There are a bunch of community forums around this topic as well. The next one is Feb. 28 at the Douglas Truth Library from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Cause:
Ending Violence

I think the Violence in Seattle has increased because of the housig market and how many communitys are being torn apart because of the genterication of communitys. in Fact the housing Market in Seattle is failing to to a mass amount of forclosures in Seattle becuase the property cost have welll exceeded the property value due to the growing population in Seattle. Also INflation can possibly be a problem in this because alot of people mainly the middleclass generally does not make enough money to support thereselfs in todays world so some people take measures into ther own hands exmaple gangs and get money rather it be legallly or illegally. plus also when u look at gang history a gang can range from a small group of people to a large organization for example the mafia. So as gangs grow gennerally violence grows as well and some of the reasons why gangs grow can be linked to a shortage of money or inflation.

Yea i think so because my cousin De'Che Morrison
was killed this year and i think it was fair that they took his life over violence but who ever took her life from my family will have hell to pay for his death. Violence is really getting way outta hand cause everytime you turn around people is dieing
over gang related things .i think we should just quit all of this violence.

I think the violence is could be a result of the growth in population in the city. Seattle is an attraction to many new families because our economy has been so stable and because the housing market is flourishing. This urbanization definately contributes to a shift in economy, crowding and more traffic. Seattle is the next New York City for better or for worse. With that of couse comes gentification and tension among different neighborhoods and that will definately influence the drug market which makes gangs into existence.
I fear that Seattle will be tested in the next five years in the social services department, education department, and policing.
